Indoor Herb Garden For The Modern Home Featuring Design Within Reach

Over the past few year, I have been cooking more and more and I love creating recipes using fresh herbs. I have wanted to create an indoor herb garden for a few months but could never find anything that I liked! I also am no green thumb expert so the thought of even keeping fresh herbs alive exhausted me! Knowing the lighting requirements and watering schedule..oh emmmmm geeeeee….talk about breaking out in hives.

So when Design Within Reach (my absolute favorite furniture store) reached out to me about their new Story Planter, well….the rest is history. 1. -it was the perfect scale for an area of our kitchen entry way we had not yet found the perfect piece for. And 2..this would be the perfect piece for the modern indoor garden my heart and taste buds longed for!!

(Thrilled to announce that Design Within Reach and I have teamed up to gift one of you lucky GFY readers a Story Planter of your own. FIND GIVEAWAY DETAILS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST)

Since 1999, Design Within Reach has been bringing the best of modern design to commercial and residential customers. They work hard to make sure customers are completely satisfied—beginning with their site experience to the final delivery. They revolutionized the modern design industry by providing customers rapid delivery—90+% of their products ship within 24 hours. They have great products that can't be found anywhere else—not even on the internet. They are constantly adding new designs—often for the first time in the US. Most of mine and Lin’s home furnishings are from Design Within Reach. (our dining table and chairs, our two bed frames, one of our living room chairs, and several odds and ends like the older story book case! )

This is a DWR Exclusive

Fascinated by how spaces transform over time, Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei invented the word Afteroom to name their Stockholm studio. “We simply want to create things people won’t get rid of,” says Chen-Yen. In creating the Story Planter (2020), they brought a new twist to floral arrangements by accommodating plants and flowers in a vertical stack within a very compact footprint. “It was not an easy task, though it appears really simple,” says Hung-Ming. “We hope people see it as a quiet, functional sculpture.” All-metal construction and a heavy weighted base provide strength and stability. Bowls can be set facing forward or to the side. They do not have drainage holes. Made in Taiwan.

The Story Bookcase and the Story Planter are built on the same stem. If you purchase both a bookcase and a planter, you can mix and match shelves and bowls to create literary gardens and libraries that grow.

I love the simple assembly. It shipped in multiple boxes for easy handling too!

This space-saving compact footprint saves valuable room. All though gorgeous for plants and flowers..it is also great for storing odds and ends. The bowls can be set facing forward or to the side and removed and reinserted as desired once planter is fully assembled! I really LOVE this feature because my kitchen where I have my Story Planter actually does not get the best light but I am able to remove my herbs and take them to a window ledge or even outside to sunbathe!!!! I can also do all of my herb manicuring over at the sink area.

Seriously my dears….Nothing livens up a dish like fresh herbs, which is why I am so thrilled I can always have some on hand now! So glad Design Within Reach and a few Tulsa companies could make my dream a reality.

I worked with Grogg’s Green Barn on the herbs! They have some beautiful organic, locally grown herbs and vegetable plants or you can grow your own from their wide selection of organic and heirloom seeds. Organic and non-GMO is better for everyone so we are so happy about this. Carla Grogg is so knowledgeable and really helped me pick some gorgeous herbs for my new Story Planter. I love the variety in size and texture and am excited to even experiment with some fun herbs like pineapple sage, chocolate mint, and lemon verbena.

I highly recommend visiting Grogg’s if you are local. They also have a beautiful garden-to-table restaurant called The Reserve and I cannot wait to attend a dinner soon!

I also worked with Cohlmia’s; The Plant Place in Tulsa too. Kirbi is a Horticulturist and interior designer for Cohlmia’s and loves plants so much! I really wanted her expertise with my indoor herb garden project so I carried my Story Planter’s bowls to her along with the herbs from Grogg’s. She planted them for me and shared some amazing tips and tricks for me along the way that we are excited to share with you today.

First you’ll want to make your herbs are getting light! Sunlight is best but Kirbi also suggested a growing plant light or even putting a lamp with an LED bulb on them for a period of time a day!

Second, don’t over water the plant. Kirbi suggested a water mister and watering every 3 days or so but also wants me to make sure so I will just stick my finger in the soil about an inch and if it’s dry my herbs need watering.

Remember, every plant is different, so if you’re having any problems just ask your local flower store or nursery for help. and of course if you are local here in Tulsa I cannot suggest Grogg’s and Cohlmia’s enough.
